Business and Technology
'Bristol has a wonderful history of innovation, forward-thinking, vision and cross-sectoral partnership.'
- Jonathon Porritt, Chairman, UK Sustainable Development Commission
- Modern Bristol is one of the most popular British cities for business relocation and a major focus for media and new technology.
- The HTML web language was partly developed at the Hewlett Packard research centre in Bristol, Aardman Animations created its Oscar-winning Wallace and Gromit films here, and the BBC's strong presence in Clifton includes its phenomenally successful Natural History Unit.
Bristol has been a business centre since its Saxon-era beginnings. For centuries the main source of its strength was the trade that passed through its port. The advent of Isambard Kingdom Brunel marked a new era in which Bristol became renowned for engineering and manufacturing: ships, aeroplanes, cars and large-scale structures such as bridges and railways. Present-day Bristol is still a centre for manufacturing - Rolls Royce is based here, and Concorde was built at Filton - but it has also become a powerhouse of business and technology.
Bristol is home to
- Hewlett Packard's largest research centre outside of California
- British Aerospace's centre for design and manufacture of the Airbus
- A thriving animation mini-industry, spearheaded by Aardman Animations and also including the Bolex Brothers (The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb) and Fictitious Egg .
- Pioneering environmental projects such as the Centre for Sustainable Energy, the Recycling Consortium, the Soil Association, the Western Partnership for Sustainable Development.
- Scores of media companies covering the spectrum from conventional film and TV production to digital media
