You have planned to go to Canada for pursuing further studies, be it the undergraduate or the post-graduate courses, you need to have some sort of schedule so that everything can fall into place at the right time. In other words what you need is an application timeline to guide you when to do what. Let us chart this out month wise and step –by-step.
1. April 2015 to September 2015-06-15
Find out the different universities which offer the courses you are interested in and you can short-list this. You should be able to narrow down the universities to 8 or 10. You need to visit the different websites of the universities you have narrowed down and check out the deadlines, requirements and any other essentials. This should be done by August, so that by September 2015 you can look into the funding, that is, scholarships and the options available for bank loans. You can download the forms from the websites and also check out the options available for accommodations.
2. June 2015 to December 2015
You need the initial preparation for the standardised exams like SAT, GMAT, GRE, TOFEL or IELTS. This depends on the course you have opted for besides the university. Make sure you register for GRE/GMAT at least three months before the date of the test. Registering for TOFEL or IELTS should be a month prior to the test. You can plan to take the test around September so that you have buffer time in case of a re-test.
3. August 2015 to October 2015
Prepare for the application by making sure you have short-listed the colleges. You can sketch out your strengths and find out the reason for being unique as an applicant. The required reference letters can be got from your professors and managers, for which you need to contact them. Try for at least 2 to 3 reference letters. Draft your essays and SOP’s and give yourself enough time to structure them well. Make sure to apply before the deadline.
4. November 2015 to April 2016
For sure, you will receive quite a few e-mails from different colleges and universities. Make sure you are not negligent about this and reply immediately. Personal interviews on videos are scheduled around January to March. Make sure you appear for these. Make your decision as soon as you get the letters of acceptance. You need to let the universities know of your decision before the deadline. Pay the deposit required to re-confirm the admission.
5. May 2016 to July 2016
You can look out for scholarships after making sure these are applicable. You can apply for the student loan once you have received the letter of acceptance and after checking the visa requirements get your documents ready. Visa processing might take some tie, so be sure to apply for the required student visa.
6. July 2016 to August 2016
Once you have made sure all the arrangements are in place, you can book your airline tickets. You need to make the required arrangements to get hold of Travellers Cheques. After which, you can go through all the documents to make sure you have everything in place and well sorted out. Make sure you have photo copies of all the documents, this adds to the security. Get ready to fly after you have gone through the pre-departure check-list.
Following the above timeline and guidance, there will be no last minute running around and you can fly in peace. Applying, and getting admission before taking the final step of flying, if this is done systematically, can sure be of a great help.
