10 Key Considerations When You Decide to Study Overseas
    Tuesday, June 02, 2015

Choosing the right country for higher education is the primary step for students aspiring to study abroad. The destination you decide must be conducive to your interest, your budget and your passion. Here are a few considerations for selecting the right country overseas for higher education.

    1. Choosing the destination – When you carry out a research on various countries, you will find a plethora of options related to study overseas programmes. Keep your specific goal and interests in mind while making the choice. For example, if you love adventure sports, you could choose a country that offers a lot of exciting opportunities for adventure and if you are looking for a medical course, make sure the country you choose offers a degree that is recognised in your country or worldwide.
    2. Passion for learning a foreign language – Many people wish to study abroad because they are passionate about mastering a foreign language. Joining an overseas university would prove to be an excellent way to practice a foreign language and fine tune your skills. If you wish to study a foreign language, choose a country where people speak the language you wish to learn because this will make your task much easier.
    3. Choosing a culturally rich country – If culture is important to you, you must choose a country that has a culturally rich background. In this case, you can choose to study in the chosen non-English speaking country even if you are not highly proficient.
    4. Getting the actual environment right – In any study abroad program, you must ensure that the actual environment you are planning to study in is good. Remember that as a student, you will be spending a couple or more years in your study abroad destination. For this, you must consider the geographical and geological locations that include the local weather conditions and also consider whether the college is in a rural area or suburb or in an urban centre.
    5. Talk to students already in the country – This is one of the best ways to find out about the destination you wish to study in. If you are able to find a student who has done the same program you plan on doing or has studied in the same country, you can get some idea about the college, the course and the country.
    6. Decide on the subject first – Even before you start looking out for the right college, it is important to decide on the subject you wish to study. This will help you decide on the right course to pick. If you love animation or music over physics or mathematics, convince your parents instead of labouring at the Engineering course you absolutely hate.
    7. Research your options carefully - Today technology has opened up numerous avenues to get information. On the internet, you will be able to carry out extensive research and find the exact course that will suit your specific interests, eligibility, budget and academic qualifications.
    8. Apply to at least three colleges – In order to be on the safe side, choose three or four colleges that offer the course of your choice and apply for all of them. This will avoid disappointments.
    9. Check for eligibility – As you choose the country for overseas education, check if the entry requirements at college you have narrowed down match your eligibility in terms of knowledge, English language skills and expertise. Ensure that you meet all the necessary eligibility criteria by carefully going through entry requirements at the university websites.
    10. Choose a country with lot of career opportunities – If you are planning to complete your course and settling down in the country, you need to make sure that you have enough career options there. The course you take must be able to secure a relevant job for you. As you choose a course based on your particular skills and tastes, it is also important to ensure that the course will get you the job once you graduate.
