The International English Language Testing System is a tool prepared by the Cambridge English Language Assessment for assessing the qualitative ability of students coming from non – native English speaking countries to ensure that the incoming potential migrants/ students can seamlessly transition to an entirely different cultural setting with the help of a test that helps evaluate their English language proficiency.
A common question by most Indian students and working professionals is, Why do we need to give the IELTS examination, when the medium of instruction for both school and college was English? While the answer is not that straightforward, it is necessary that one realises that the level of language competency required by a particular country and/ or institution could be far higher than the levels taught within the country. That said, we cannot override the fact that English is a language and hence cannot be subject to exacting standards as many other subjects could.
Keeping these pointers in mind, the student is expected to meet some basic score requirements. For most educational institutions, a mere 6.5/9 will suffice; however, for other major universities the standard of scores could vary from a 7 band upward. Since the reliability of the IELTS as a test is far higher and widely accepted, a good step 1 is to ensure that the candidate must approach the IELTS not as a mandatory requirement but as a good first step in building one’s personality and developing it consistently. The test itself is available in 1600 locations across the world. The most recent development is the introduction of the new computer – based IELTS test akin to its partner TOEFL. While students with a weak limb may find it difficult during the exam typing furiously and maintaining time, the turn around time for the results is reduced to half. This is perhaps one of the major reasons for now that the student would opt for an online test, familiarity being a close second.
If done with a view to carve a niche for oneself in the Western world, this preparation alone could result in a more prudent, dignified global leader of tomorrow. Communication is the only ready source for the world to come closer. However, it must be noted here that it is quintessential to prepare all 4 modules with an idea of using it beyond the realms of academic boundaries.
Working on all 4 modules i.e, listening, reading, writing and speaking concomitantly will prepare the foundation for the student’s stay abroad. Reading is of absolute importance, as each time one indulges in reading he has already come up with an idea, a work-plan. This helps to improvise both in the Writing and Speaking sections. Ensuring to pen down difficult words alongwith not just the meaning but its relevant context makes the exercise of reading more meaningful.
While the IELTS is the most sought after examination, practising the right approach towards the English language and its study is equally important. Regular exposure to the right dialects, acclimatising to the various accents available globally and working on comprehension both while reading and listening can accelerate the quantitative performance of the candidate.
The IELTS has been designed to help you buckle up for a new academic and/or professional adventure so Enjoy the Ride!
