California Baptist University
1. Overview of the institution
Founded in 1950 as California Baptist College in El Monte, California, it is one of the top private Christian colleges and universities in Southern California. It started with over 120 students in its very first year. In about five years the campus has outgrown and the college moved to Riverside. Over the next 50 years, the college expanded both in the number of students enrolled and the size of the campus. The college also received accreditations for many of its courses, e.g.: by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the National Association of Schools of Music to name just two of them.
In September 1998, California Baptist College officially became California Baptist University. Today it has nearly 8000 students studying on a 160 acre campus. The university has 72 bachelor degree programmes, and 25 master degree programmes. In 2014, the U.S. News & World Report, adjudged California Baptist University to be the Best Regional University.
2. Location and facilities
California Baptist University’s main campus is situated in the centre of Riverside, just a short drive from popular beaches and mountain resorts. The 160 acre campus has over 30 buildings including the 94,800 sq. ft. Eugene and Billie Yeager Center. The student accommodation consists of separate men’s and women’s residence halls, and apartment blocks. There is the 270-seat Wallace Theatre as well as a fitness and aquatic centre. The Annie Gabriel Library, and the JoAnn Hawkins Music building, one of the nation’s most advanced music production and recording facilities is also part of the Riverside campus.
The sports teams at California Baptist University are called the Lancers. CBU offers 19 sports for men and women. For men, California Baptist sponsors baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. For women, the university sponsors basketball, cheerleading, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, volleyball, and water polo.

6. Careers: Unique student
The Career Centre at the university assists students to discover their interests, select a major, find an internship, and/or full-time employment. The Centre provides the resources, assessments, and assistance to get the students started.
The Career Advisors host presentations and workshops on a range of topics from building an effective resume to professional etiquette and career planning. The centre also invites a selection of employers to visit the campus each year to give presentations and to inform CBU students on what they are looking for in their employees.
Some notable alumni are Nathan Fletcher, a member of the California State Assembly; Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life; Drew Shirley, guitarist of the Christian rock band Switchfoot.
